What is an Orientation Leader?
An Orientation Leader (OL) is responsible for helping Buffalo State's newest Bengals (First-Year and Transfer students along with their family and support networks) in adapting to the Buffalo State community. We support, engage, and foster learning through connections and meaningful interactions both during and outside of orientation. The team selected will be expected to work Orientation, participate in events and training throughout the spring semester, be a part of the summer orientations, and fall events including Bengal Bound, Weeks of Welcome, and Homecoming and Family Weekend.
About the Position
- Be in good academic standing, and enrolled for the upcoming academic term.
- Be in good disciplinary standing with Buffalo State University, Residence Life, and Student Conduct and Community Standards.
- Exhibit good interpersonal, leadership, and presentation skills
- Possess a professional attitude when dealing with faculty, staff, students, and their families
- Ability to work during all of the designated dates and times
- Must be reliable, flexible, responsible, confident, and display a willingness to help
- Enthusiastically welcome new students and family members to Buffalo State
- Develop a professional rapport with new students and their families
- Be accessible and willing to assist with any information needs of students and families
- Prepare and conduct well-organized and thorough small group meetings for new students
- Efficiently complete all logistical tasks to ensure the orientation program proceeds smoothly and effectively
- Maintain regular communication with supervisors
- Take initiative with unanticipated tasks or problems
- Lift, carry, move, and prepare supplies and materials
- Be a team player and willing to interact with incoming students
- Maintain a positive attitude
- Mentor students during orientation and throughout the academic year
- Additional responsibilities as assigned
- The Orientation Team will be committed to working all of the dates associated with the position. These typically include training in the spring semester, January Orientation, and June, July, and August Orientation sessions.
- Must be available to work all dates with no conflicts in schedule, accommodations will not be made for other campus activities or jobs.
- Be available during the following events (some events are tentative and are subject to change)
- Attend and actively participate in all training sessions.
- Fall/Spring Open Houses
- NYC trips to meet with accepted students and their parents
- Spring Orientation
- All Summer Orientation Sessions
- Bengal Bound (week prior to classes starting)
How to Apply
Attend a General Interest Meeting
If you are interested in applying to be an Orientation Leader, you will be required to attend one of three General Interest Meetings to learn more about the position. The Orientation, Transition, and Family Programs BengalConnect page has all of the dates, times and locations of these meetings.

Interview
After review of your application materials, a member from our office will reach out to set up an interview time.
Accept or Decline offer
Once interviews are complete, we will extend offers to the candidates we would like to bring on for summer 2024! It is then up to the candidate to accept or decline the position.
